Common questions about accessible toilet hire
Everything you need to know about DDA-compliant portable toilet hire across the Midlands.
An accessible portable toilet is significantly larger than a standard unit, typically around 1750mm x 1750mm internally, to allow a wheelchair user to enter, turn and use the facility independently. Key features include a wide access door, internal turning space, stainless steel support handrails, a lowered basin, non-slip flooring and an external occupancy indicator. Our units are designed to meet the requirements of the Equality Act 2010 (formerly the DDA).
Under the Equality Act 2010, event organisers have a duty to make reasonable adjustments to ensure disabled people are not placed at a substantial disadvantage. For any public event where temporary toilets are provided, it is considered best practice, and increasingly expected by licensing authorities, to include at least one accessible unit. Failing to do so may put your event licence at risk and could expose you to legal challenge.
As a general guide, we recommend at least one accessible unit for every 10 standard units, or a minimum of one accessible unit for any public event regardless of size. For events where a significant proportion of attendees may have mobility requirements, such as disability sports events or community events, a higher ratio would be appropriate. We are happy to advise based on your specific event.
Yes. Our accessible units feature an extra-wide doorway and an internal footprint of approximately 1750mm x 1750mm, which provides sufficient turning space for most standard manual and powered wheelchairs. Stainless steel grab rails are positioned to assist both wheelchair users and ambulant disabled people.
Our units are designed to be sited on a firm, reasonably level surface. We will discuss the site conditions with you at the time of booking and can advise on the best positioning to ensure safe, independent access. For marquee fields and outdoor venues, we can often work with existing ground conditions, please give us a call to discuss your specific situation.
Under CDM 2015, Principal Contractors have a duty to ensure welfare facilities on site are suitable for all workers, including those with disabilities. Where a site employs or may employ disabled workers, accessible welfare facilities must be provided where reasonably practicable. This includes accessible toilet provision. We can supply accessible units on a long-term construction hire basis with regular servicing included.
