Frequently asked questions
Everything you need to know about waste management and septic tank emptying in the Midlands.
As a general rule, a domestic septic tank serving a family of four should be emptied at least once a year. However, frequency depends on the tank size, number of occupants and usage. Signs that your tank needs emptying sooner include slow drains, gurgling pipes, bad odours near the tank or drain field, or sewage surfacing in the garden. We recommend booking a regular annual service to avoid emergency call-outs.
A septic tank is a two-chamber system that partially treats waste. Liquid effluent drains to a soakaway or drain field, while solids settle and are broken down by bacteria in the tank. A cesspit (or cesspool) is simply a sealed underground tank with no outlet, it collects all waste and must be emptied more frequently, typically every 6–8 weeks for a family home. We can empty both types across the Midlands.
No. Septic tank and cesspit waste is classified as controlled waste under the Environmental Protection Act 1990. It must be collected, transported and disposed of by a registered waste carrier at a licensed facility. Enviro24 is a registered Environment Agency waste carrier and all waste we collect is disposed of at approved treatment works. We can provide documentation and compliance certificates on request.
For a standard domestic septic tank, emptying typically takes between 30 minutes and 1 hour, depending on tank size, condition and access. We will hose down the interior as part of the service. Commercial and large-volume tanks may take longer. We will give you an accurate time estimate when you call to book.
Yes, we empty all types of on-site sewage facilities including septic tanks, cesspits, cesspools, holding tanks, pump stations and portable toilet waste tanks. If you are unsure which type of system you have, give us a call and we can advise.
