Environmental Protection Act 1990
Template documentation for controlled waste transfers in compliance with UK environmental regulations
A Waste Transfer Note (WTN) is a legal document required under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and the Waste (England and Wales) Regulations 2011. It must accompany all transfers of controlled waste between parties and be retained for a minimum of two years.
A WTN is required every time controlled waste is transferred from one party to another. This includes when we collect waste from your site, empty septic tanks, or remove waste from portable toilet units.
As a waste producer, you have a legal duty of care to ensure your waste is handled correctly. This includes ensuring the carrier is registered with the Environment Agency and that appropriate documentation is completed.
Name, address, and contact details of the waste producer
Name, registration number, and contact details of the waste carrier
Address where the waste transfer takes place
The date when the waste was collected or transferred
Type, quantity, and EWC code of the waste being transferred
Standard Industrial Classification code for the waste producer
I confirm that the information provided above is accurate and that I have fulfilled my duty of care responsibilities under the Environmental Protection Act 1990.
This Waste Transfer Note must be retained by both parties for a minimum of 2 years from the date of transfer, or 3 years if the waste is hazardous. Failure to produce this document when requested by the Environment Agency may result in a fixed penalty notice or prosecution.
